Mukta Ghai is the wife of Bollywood filmmaker Subhash Ghai. Her original name is Rehana. She was named Mukta by Subhash Ghai's mother. It was after his wife was given the name Mukta, Subhash Ghai started his own film production company Mukta Arts Private Limited, in 2000, which became a public company. Her husband won a national award for producing movies like 'Iqbal.’

Mukta Ghai is a story writer and producer of some of Subhash Ghai’s movies like ‘Hero’ (1983), and ‘Karma’ (1986).

Subhash Ghai is the executive chairman of Mukta Arts. In 1970, Subhash Ghai married Rehana aka Mukta. Mukta is from Pune. Currently, she lives with her husband in Mumbai. The couple has two daughters, Meghna Ghai Puri and Muskaan Ghai.

Meghna Ghai is the president of Whistling Woods International Institute, which was founded by her father, Subhash Ghai. This institute teaches students filmmaking and its various aspects like: production, direction, cinematography, acting, animation process, etc.

Mukta Ghai wrote the story of the movie 'Gautam Govinda' a film made by Subhash Ghai. This film released in 1979, and it starred Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Moushami Chatterjee and Aruna Irani in lead roles. The film was reportedly influenced by works of Manmohan Desai’s style of making movies.

Later on, Mukta Ghai co-wrote the story of blockbuster movie 'Hero' which starred Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Seshadri in lead roles. Both Meenakshi and Jackie achieved stardom with this film. The music of the movie was its USP. The film was a love story of a criminal (Jackie) and the police inspector’s daughter Radha (Meenakshi). Even cinematography, choreography (dance and fight), screenplay and dialogues were appreciated, and the film turned out to be a huge success at the box office.

After the success of Hero (1983), Mukta Ghai co-wrote the story of another blockbuster movie 'Karma'(1986) which starred Dilip Kumar and Nutan in the lead roles. The song of this movie ‘Mera Karma Tu,’ 'Aye Watan Tere Liye' and 'Aye Sanam Tere Liye' are still considered to be the prime songs talking about patriotic feeling.

The song 'Aye Watan Tere Liye' is still a part of 'The Independence Day' and 'The Republic Day' celebrations. This film also starred Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Poonam Dhillon and Anupam Kher. Anupam Kher as Dr. Michael Dang stole the show opposite Dilip Kumar. The slap on Michael Dang's face by Dilip Kumar was one of the highlights of the movie. Even Nutan's performance as a dumb woman was equally appreciated.

Mukta Ghai co-wrote the story of another Subhash Ghai's movie 'Black and White' (2008) which received wide critical acclaim and premiered at the international film festivals of Delhi and Pune. This film was not the usual kind of movie but was a serious one compared to other films.

Mukta Ghai engaged herself in learning the crafts of filmmaking. Subhash Ghai made some famous movies like Kalicharan, Pardes, Vidhata, Hero, Karma, Taal, Ram Lakhan, Saudagar, Karz, and Khalnayak. Subhash Ghai was considered to be the showman of Bollywood.

Subhash Ghai was known for song and dance sequences in films and did preserve Indian culture and Indian music in Bollywood. He did not deviate from our Indian culture in filmmaking.

It is a famous saying that 'Behind every great/successful man stands a woman'- Mukta Ghai defines this logic. She is also a very religious minded person, and her devotion to her husband goes to emphasize that a man’s success is often dependent on the work and support of their wives.

While Mukta Ghai too represents the success of all Ghai’s films at the box office, she even helped her husband behind the screen. Reports suggest that there was a disproportionally tiny percentage of women working as producers then even from successful filmmaker’s family, Mukta Ghai broke this shackle too, she turned herself as a producer for the movie ‘Hero’ and ‘Karma.’
